March is the perfect time to open your heart (and home!) to a small pet with a BIG personality. “Adopt a Guinea Pig” Month shines a spotlight on these gentle, social companions who are often overlooked in shelters and rescues. At Animal Medical Center, we absolutely love caring for guinea pigs — and we’re excited to share why they make such wonderful pets and how you can provide the best care possible.

Why Guinea Pigs Make Great Pets

They’re Gentle and Social

Guinea pigs are known for their sweet, friendly personalities. With proper handling and patience, many become very affectionate and enjoy interacting with their humans.

They’re Full of Personality

From happy “wheeks” when they hear the fridge open to playful zoomies around their enclosure, guinea pigs are surprisingly expressive and entertaining.

Great Family Pets

They can be excellent companions for families with children (with supervision). They’re generally less fragile than some other small pets and tend to be docile when handled properly.

They Thrive in Pairs

Guinea pigs are herd animals and do best with a same-species companion. Watching them bond, communicate, and cuddle is one of the joys of guinea pig ownership.

Basic Guinea Pig Care Guidelines

Bringing home a guinea pig is a long-term commitment — they can live 5–8 years or longer with proper care. Here are some essentials:

Housing

  • Provide a spacious enclosure (the bigger, the better!).

  • Solid-bottom cages with fleece liners or paper-based bedding are ideal.

  • Avoid wire-bottom floors to protect their feet.

  • Include hiding spots, tunnels, and enrichment items.

Nutrition

Guinea pigs have unique dietary needs:

  • Unlimited grass hay (such as timothy hay) — this is critical for dental and digestive health.

  • Fresh leafy greens daily (like romaine, cilantro, bell peppers).

  • High-quality guinea pig pellets (fortified with Vitamin C).

  • Fresh water available at all times.

Important: Guinea pigs cannot produce their own Vitamin C. They must receive it daily through diet to prevent serious health issues.

Veterinary Care

Guinea pigs benefit from regular wellness exams, just like dogs and cats. Early detection of dental issues, weight loss, or illness can make a significant difference in their quality of life. If you’re considering adoption, we’re happy to answer questions about preventive care and proper husbandry.

Grooming & Handling

  • Regular nail trims are important.

  • Long-haired breeds may require brushing.

  • Gentle, secure handling builds trust and prevents injury.

Consider Adoption First

If you’re thinking about adding a guinea pig (or two!) to your family, adoption is a wonderful option.

Oshkosh Area Humane Society

The Oshkosh Area Humane Society frequently has guinea pigs available for adoption. Their team works hard to match small pets with loving homes and can help guide you through the adoption process.

K&R Small Animal Sanctuary

K&R Small Animal Sanctuary specializes in small mammals and is a fantastic resource for those interested in guinea pigs and other pocket pets. They are passionate about proper education and responsible adoption.

By adopting, you’re not only gaining a new companion — you’re giving an animal in need a second chance.

Is a Guinea Pig Right for You?

Before adopting, consider:

  • Do you have space for an appropriately sized enclosure?

  • Are you prepared for daily cleaning and fresh food prep?

  • Can you commit to veterinary care?

  • Are you ready for a 5–8 year commitment?

If the answer is yes, a guinea pig might be a perfect addition to your family!
