Giving medication to pets can be challenging, but it is a vital part of treatment and recovery. Whether your pet needs pills, liquids, or topical medication, the right approach can make the process safer and less stressful for everyone involved.
General Tips
Always follow the dosing instructions provided by your veterinarian
Give medications at the recommended times
Never stop or change a medication without veterinary advice
Giving Pills
Hide pills in a small amount of soft food if approved by your vet
Use a pill pocket or treat designed for medication
For pets that won’t eat medicated food, gently place the pill at the back of the mouth and encourage swallowing
Giving Liquid Medications
Use the syringe provided by your clinic
Administer slowly into the side of the mouth, not straight down the throat
Allow your pet time to swallow to prevent aspiration
Topical Medications
Apply only to clean, dry skin
Prevent licking if advised
Wash your hands after application
Reducing Stress
Choose a calm, quiet environment
Use gentle restraint
Offer praise or a reward afterward
If you are struggling to give medication or your pet reacts strongly, contact our clinic. We can often demonstrate techniques or suggest alternative formulations.
