March 15th is National Catio Day, and it’s the perfect time to talk about one of our favorite ways to enrich a cat’s life while keeping them safe: the catio!

Cats love sunshine, fresh air, birds, and bugs—but allowing cats to roam freely outdoors comes with real risks. A well-designed catio (a secure outdoor enclosure designed specifically for cats) offers the best of both worlds: outdoor stimulation with added protection.

What Is a Catio?

A catio is an enclosed outdoor space that allows cats to experience the outdoors without roaming freely. Catios can be as simple as a window-mounted enclosure or as elaborate as a fully enclosed patio with shelves, ramps, and climbing structures.

The Benefits of Catios

Catios offer both physical and mental health benefits for cats of all ages:

Mental enrichment

  • Exposure to new sights, sounds, and smells

  • Reduces boredom, stress, and anxiety

  • Helps prevent behavior issues linked to under-stimulation

Physical activity

  • Encourages climbing, jumping, and movement

  • Supports healthy weight and joint health

  • Especially helpful for indoor cats who need more exercise

Safety compared to free roaming

  • Prevents wandering, getting lost, or territorial fights

  • Protects wildlife while keeping cats contained

  • Reduces exposure to traffic and environmental hazards

Why Proper Construction and Safety Matter

Not all catios are created equal. A poorly built enclosure can still put your cat at risk. When planning or purchasing a catio, safety should always come first.

Key safety considerations include:

  • Sturdy materials: Use strong wire mesh (not chicken wire) that cannot be bent or chewed through

  • Secure attachment: Ensure there are no gaps where cats could squeeze out

  • Roof coverage: Prevents escapes and protects from falling debris or predators

  • Stable flooring: Solid or well-secured surfaces to prevent injury

  • Weather protection: Shade, airflow, and shelter from rain, heat, and cold

We recommend regularly inspecting your catio for wear, loose fasteners, or rust—especially after winter weather.

Important Health Considerations (Even With a Catio)

While catios are much safer than unrestricted outdoor access, they are not completely risk-free. Cats using catios can still be exposed to certain health concerns, which is why ongoing preventive care remains essential.

Potential risks include:

  • Parasites: Fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites can still be transmitted through insects or wildlife near the enclosure

  • Infectious diseases: Outdoor exposure increases the risk of viruses like FeLV, even without direct contact

  • Toxins: Plants, chemicals, or lawn treatments near the catio can pose dangers

  • Injury risks: Climbing structures and outdoor surfaces can still lead to falls or minor injuries

For these reasons, we strongly recommend:

  • Staying current on vaccinations

  • Using year-round parasite prevention

  • Scheduling regular wellness exams

  • Supervising catio time when possible

Creating the Best Life for Your Cat

Catios are a wonderful way to enrich your cat’s life while maintaining safety—but they work best as part of a complete care plan. Indoor enrichment, regular veterinary visits, proper nutrition, and preventive care all play an important role in keeping your cat happy and healthy.

If you’re considering a catio or want help determining the right preventive care for a cat who enjoys outdoor access, our team is always happy to help.

This National Catio Day, let’s celebrate safe adventures, healthy cats, and the joy of a little sunshine—without the risks of roaming free.
