Dental Health for Pets

Oral health directly affects overall wellness. Untreated dental disease can lead to pain, infection, and systemic health problems like heart, kidney, or liver disease.

Tips for Maintaining Oral Health:

  • Daily or Weekly Brushing: Start brushing your pet’s teeth gradually using pet-safe toothpaste. This is the most effective preventive measure.

  • Dental Chews and Toys: Promote chewing to reduce plaque and tartar buildup, especially for dogs and rabbits.

  • Regular Vet Exams: Your veterinarian can identify early signs of dental disease and safely perform professional cleanings under anesthesia if needed.

Warning Signs of Dental Disease:

  • Bad breath

  • Red, inflamed, or bleeding gums

  • Drooling or difficulty eating

  • Pawing at the mouth or facial swelling

Extra Tip: For small mammals, monitor their teeth regularly—overgrown teeth can prevent proper eating and lead to GI stasis or weight loss.
